Growing up SOCIAL review

I recently read an interesting book, Growing Up Social. Some parts of the book I skimmed over as it had to do more with parenting skills and suggestions and I have read a few books on that in the past, that is not what interest me about this book. What interested me in this book was about how the internet and social media are taking over and changing how people learn, think, and act. This book gives some great ways to counter-react it, set boundaries, and focus on what is important!

Screen-time can consume every moment of the day, sap creativity in our heads, destroy relationships, become an idol, it has power, but we don't have to allow it and we need to be teaching our children how to properly use it so they don't fall victim to it! There are times when I have let it control me!

Recently I deleted over 100 friends of my Facebook list. These were people I have not had personal contact with for years, some of them have already closed their accounts and some are just in active, so it made sense. Plus unfollowing about all, except for close family/friends and groups that are a big encouragement and help to me, such as homeschool groups and Bible study group. In addition, I unsubscribed from many email lists, some of these I subscribed to years ago and just don't read anymore, but it takes time for me to delete those. Let me tell ya that has eliminated a lot of wasted time!

It is hard to go anywhere now, where you don't see a screen...TV, ipads/tablets, cell phones, computers, and even screens with advertisements. Screens are everywhere!

This book had a lot of statics, which were alarming to me! Seeing an increase in mental disorders  from it.  I didn't grow up with internet or social media, I am so thankful for that!! However, our children are and I fear what could become of the future and how people interact and communicate if people let it control them.
I am able to give-away one free book, so if you would like to have your very own to read. Please comment and share your thoughts on social media, prior to November 21, 2014!

Is technology bringing your family closer together or driving you farther apart?

Children today are no longer playing hide-and-seek outside or curling up with a good book—instead they’ve been introduced to a world of constant digital entertainment through television, video games, and mobile devices. And while technology has the potential to add value to our lives and families, it can also erode a sense of togetherness and hinder a child’s emotional and social development.

In Growing Up Social, Gary Chapman and Arlene Pellicane will empower you with the necessary tools to make positive changes…starting today. Through stories, wit, and wisdom, you’ll discover how to take back your home from an over dependence on screens. Plus, you’ll learn to teach the five A+ skills that every healthy child needs to master: affection, appreciation, anger management, apology, and attention.

•Equip your child to be relationally rich in a digital world
•Replace mindless screen time with meaningful family time
•Establish simple boundaries that make a huge difference
•Discover what’s working for families that have become screen savvy
•Learn healthy ways to occupy your child while you get things done

Now is the time to equip your child to live with screen time, not for screen time. No phone, tablet, or gaming device can teach your child how to have healthy relationships—only you can.
