Guarded by Christ~review

A few weeks ago I started reading Guarded by Christ a book wrote by Heather Hollman. This is a book I didn't rush reading through and took part in the Stirring Our Souls questions at the end of each chapter. This book is full of scripture, references, and quotes by some great theologians. She writes about how to let the power of Christ work in you. She uses memorable visuals to help remember God's truth, so you can easily remember and go to them throughout the day when you are struggling and need the truth of God to give you peace.
This book really encouraged me to start memorizing scripture with the help of visual imagery, something I have not thought of doing before. If you have trouble remembering God's presence, this would be very helpful book to read to learn the techniques she uses to help her remember and the Scriptures she used to teach her. This book is also really encouraging especially if you suffer from worry or anxiety. The first part of the book, she writes about how God is guarding us and is our fortress. "As I searched the Scriptures and I understood that Jesus was guarding me by His righteousness, peace, hope, power, and His crucified life, I enjoyed a season of fresh growth in my spiritual life. But I had to remember these truths. I had to do what the command in Revelation 3:3 outlines. Here God says, Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast." "If you...make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angles concerning you to guard you in all your ways" (Psalm 91:9-11) What a reminder that we are dwelling in God and He is dwelling in us!
In the second part of the book, she writes about to live confidently and not condemned, to live harmonized and not harassed, live in delight and not despair, to live as a mighty force and not fragile, and to how to be Savior-focused not self-obsessed.
"We open the door we've been knocking on all our lives, and we find we're welcomed into a fortress where god Himself dwells. there we discover the catapult of His righteousness, a moat representing His peace, a bright window of hope, and the strong arm of His power. But most importantly we gaze upon Him, the One who rescues and keeps us. We build up the fortress each new morning and worship this God who guards our soul." This is how we live, guarded by Christ!

Product Description from Moody Publishers

Heather Holleman used to live a fragile life, a prisoner to fear, anxiety, and despair. Like many younger women, she knew Jesus, but she wasn’t strong in Him. Her search for comfort seemed unending.
Then one day, while reading a simple statement in Scripture, “God guards the lives of his faithful ones” (Psalm 97:10), that all began to change.
In Guarded by Christ: Knowing the God Who Rescues and Keeps Us, Heather guides women through a series of practical mental shifts that immensely helped her live strong in the Lord. Learn how in Jesus, you are guarded:
  • By righteousness instead of condemnation
  • By peace instead of anxiety
  • By hope instead of despair
  • By the Holy Spirit’s power instead of self-effort
  • By a crucified life instead of a self-important one
We all need maturity in Christ that prepares us not just to endure anything, but to live from the strength and peace of Jesus in every season. Guarded by Christ will help women cultivate this maturity, reconnecting them with the Savior who rescues, keeps, and holds us with His love.
